Pastor’s Viewpoints, “God Made Us to Worship Him”

“God Made Us to Worship Him”
The Rev. Lou Tiscione, Pastor, Weatherford Presbyterian Church (PCA)
The title of this article is not my opinion. God said it. Genesis 1:26-27 declares that God made man and woman in His image. Colossians 1:15-16 reveals that everything was made by Jesus, God’s only Son, the second person of the Trinity, “the image of the invisible God. Further the text documents that everything was not only made by Jesus but also for Him. Romans 11:36 states, “For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.”

My purpose is not to convince anyone of this divine truth. I can’t do that nor can any man. I am simply declaring the truth that we are creatures and as creatures we owe worship to the Creator. God doesn’t need us. He created us and all of Creation because He willed to for His glory.

I know that if our sovereign God reveals this fundamental truth to you, you will see all of life from a different perspective, His perspective. The only way that sense can be made out of all the distortions and evil in the world is to view all of life through the lens of Scripture, the breathed out words of God.

The primary evidence of knowing this truth is worship. One who knows God bows down to God in worship. Those who don’t know God will still worship. They will worship their own god, often themselves. The great reformer, John Calvin said this, “Every one of us is, from his mother’s womb, expert in inventing idols.” Acts II: 413

The cause of false worship is sin. All men inherit a sin nature from our first parents, Genesis 3. Even believers, set free from the bondage of sin, still sin, Romans 7. Therefore, God by His grace gave His people a clear command re: worship, Exodus 20:1-3. God said that His people were forbidden from bowing down to or serving any man-made image or likeness of God, Exodus 20:4-5. He declared that He is the LORD and besides Him there is no God, Isaiah 45:18. Further, any worship that is not based in God’s word is false and is idolatry, John 4:23-24.

The object of true worship is God who has revealed Himself in His word written and Word Incarnate, Jesus Christ. Jesus said that God the Father is the one who seeks worshipers, John 4.

The Apostle Paul quoted the Psalms and wrote that no one seeks after God, Psalm 14:2; Romans 3:11. Even though God has made His existence plain for all to see by what He has made, men suppress the truth in unrighteousness. We are eager to fulfill our God-given desire to worship and often do so by erecting idols. Our idols control our lives.

Normally in Evangelical Protestant Churches, we don’t see people bowing to or serving carved images as part of their acts of worship and devotion. But, we must honestly reflect upon those things that we seem to value the most and serve. In other words we are: loving, honoring and obeying things more than God! We seek to find churches that entertain us with snappy music or skits, etc. We are so full of ourselves that we think that worship is about us. Beloved, God is the object of worship. He is the “audience.”

When God is truly worshiped, the Lordship of Christ is acknowledged by submitting to His word. The words, love, honor and obey are relational words that describe our primary relationship to God in worship. In expressing our relationship to God, we need to be reminded that He established the requirements for our relationship. Jesus said, “The hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship Him. God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” John 4:23-24

Finally, Christians know that worship is not only a weekly event. Worship is what we do every moment, every day of our lives. The Apostle Paul made the daily reality of worship clear to those who have experienced His saving grace. “I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.” Romans 12:1

Christian, God made you for worship. Worship Him in holy attire!
